Why Tennis Restringing Is Specialist Work

Tennis stringing is more nuanced than other racket sports. With string tensions typically between 48–55 lbs, much wider tension ranges across player levels, and a huge variety of string types (polyester, multifilament, synthetic gut, natural gut and hybrid setups) — small adjustments make a real difference to how a racket plays.

A good tennis restring isn't just about pulling tension. It's about matching your string and setup to your playing style, frame characteristics and physical condition. Whether you need a softer multifilament to protect a sensitive elbow, a stiff polyester for explosive topspin, or a hybrid setup that balances both — we'll restring to deliver exactly what you need.

Tennis String & Tension Guide

Choosing the right tennis string and tension has a huge impact on power, control, comfort and durability. Here's how to think about your setup.

String types by purpose

  • Polyester (poly) — Stiff, durable strings ideal for spin generation and control. Best for advanced players, hard hitters and those chasing heavy topspin. Examples: Solinco Hyper-G, Babolat RPM Blast, Kirschbaum Pro Line II.
  • Multifilament — Soft, comfortable strings made from many fibres, offering excellent feel and arm protection. Ideal for players with tennis elbow, sensitive arms, or those who prioritise comfort over raw spin. Examples: Wilson Sensation, Solinco Vanquish, Tecnifibre Razor Soft.
  • Synthetic gut — Versatile, all-round strings offering a good balance of feel, power and durability. Excellent value and ideal for recreational and club players. Examples: Babolat Synthetic Gut, Tecnifibre Synthetic Gut, Kirschbaum Gut Feeling.
  • Natural gut — The premium choice. Offers unmatched comfort, power and feel. Available on request for players who want the ultimate setup.
  • Hybrid setups — Two different strings used together — typically polyester mains (for control and durability) paired with multifilament or natural gut crosses (for comfort and feel). A popular choice for advanced players who want the best of both worlds. We can build hybrids to your spec — just let us know your preferred combination.

Tennis tension guidance

Tennis tension affects control, power and comfort:

  • Beginner / recreational: 50–55 lbs — gentler on the arm, more forgiving
  • Club / intermediate: 48–55 lbs — the most common range, balances control and feel
  • Advanced / competitive: 45–55 lbs (polyester) or 52–60 lbs (multifilament) — tailored to playing style and frame

Tip: Lower tensions = more power and comfort. Higher tensions = more control and feel, but more demanding on technique and the arm. Drop the tension by 2–3 lbs when switching from multifilament to polyester to compensate for the stiffer string.

Postal tennis restringing FAQs

How does postal tennis restringing work?

Choose your restring online, package your racket securely and send it to us. Once it arrives, we'll complete the restring and return it to you using your chosen tracked delivery option.

How do I send my racket to you?

It couldn't be easier. Select send & return postage (£6.99) at checkout and we'll send you a printable label or a QR code to scan at your local parcel shop — no printer required. We'll confirm the details with you by WhatsApp and arrange everything via Evri, Yodel or Parcelforce. Prefer to arrange your own outbound postage? Choose return only (£3.99) and we'll get your restrung racket back to you tracked.

How long does postal tennis restringing take?

We typically complete tennis restrings within 24–48 hours of receiving your racket. Return delivery takes 1–3 working days based on the option you select at checkout, so most customers receive their racket back within 3–5 working days of posting it.

How much does postal tennis restringing cost?

Our postal tennis restringing service starts from £24 per racket and includes the string and professional installation. Strings like Solinco Hyper-G, Babolat RPM Blast, Wilson Sensation and Tecnifibre Razor Soft are all available, with prices varying by string choice and any extras you add at checkout.

Is it safe to send my tennis racket by post?

Yes - as long as your racket is packaged securely. We recommend bubble wrap around the frame and strings, plus a sturdy outer box. Avoid thin plastic mailing bags. Using a tracked courier service is strongly recommended.

What if I'm not sure which string or tension to choose?

No problem. Take our String Finder Quiz for tailored recommendations, or WhatsApp us before ordering and we'll suggest a setup based on your playing style, level and any specific needs (such as arm comfort or spin).

Can you do hybrid string setups?

Yes - hybrid setups are a popular request, particularly polyester mains paired with multifilament or natural gut crosses. This balances spin and control from the mains with comfort and feel from the crosses. Just send us a WhatsApp with your preferred string combination and we'll build it for you.

Do you offer natural gut restringing?

Yes - we offer natural gut on request. It's the premium choice for players who want maximum comfort, power and feel. Contact us to discuss options and pricing.

I have tennis elbow — which string would you recommend?

Multifilament strings are typically the most comfortable and the best for players with tennis elbow or arm sensitivity - they're softer and absorb more shock than polyester. Options like Wilson Sensation, Solinco Vanquish or Tecnifibre Razor Soft are great starting points. Slightly lower tensions (e.g. 50–52 lbs) also help reduce strain on the arm.

What tension do you recommend for spin?

Polyester strings at lower tensions (around 45–50 lbs) typically generate the most spin — the strings can "snap back" into position after each shot, gripping the ball for added topspin. Setups like Solinco Hyper-G or Babolat RPM Blast at 48 lbs are popular choices.

Can I send my own string?

In most cases yes — you're welcome to bring your own strings, provided there's enough for the full racket. Get in touch before ordering to confirm compatibility and discuss labour-only pricing.

Do you restring all tennis rackets?

We restring all major tennis racket brands and most frames. If you have an unusual or vintage racket, please send us a message before ordering — we'll confirm we can take care of it.
